AMD Systems Building guide for Budget gamers / midrange users

Budget : RM2500 - 3500

These prices r correct at publish times, some prices may vary according to place

Components Recommendation
Proc

(RM325)

AMD Duron 800

The greatest, most overclockable proc in the market today. U can easily push it up to 1 Gig, no prob. 200 MHz system bus, 192 KB on-chip, full speed cache. Superscalar FPU with Enhanced 3DNow! technology. Only prob is that it needs good cooling. These chips runs HOT

MOBO

(RM390)

MSI K7T Pro2A

Editor's choice at Anandtech, this mobo has it all, 6 PCI, 1 CMR, 3 DIMMs, ATA 100 support, 2 fan headers, 4 USB (2nd set via xtra connector, included), great over clocking ability through bios plus great software bundle. The only thing lacking is RAID support. Stability is top notch & the price is irresistible.

Casing

(RM170)

Aopen KF45 w/Anzen 300W PSU

It might not be as good as Enlight's 7327, but it's a lot cheaper & looks great too.  3 X 5.25" bays, 3 X 3" bays (1 hidden), a lot of rooms for modding. The PSU is one of the best around, providing U with stable power supply for U'r over clocked system.

Memory

(RM 210)

128 MB Micron Cas 2

One of the most popular brands in the budget over clocking community, these sticks will get U up to 110 FSB, no prob, CAS 2 some more.

Storage (Harddisk)

(RM 400)

15.0 GB Maxtor Diamondmax 60

ATA 100, 7200 RPM great speed, highly reliable storage for your games.

CD rom drive

(RM175)

Creative Infra Audioexcel 52X

This baby has remote control, the fastest transfer rate in its class, plus the Audioexcel™  technology allows you to play audio CDs like any specialty CD player, & plays scratched CDs too. The only downside is it's noisy.

Floppy Drive

(RM45)

1.44 MB Sony

Again, it's a Sony

Soundcard

(RM180)

Creative Soundblaster Live! Value digital

Again, nothing's better than Creative in this dept. The boxed version gives U xtra value by providing bundled games. Its features 5 output including 1 digital SPDIF & software upgradeable via their Live!Ware software

Graphics card

(RM390)

32MB DDR Abit Siluro GeForce2 MX w/TV Out

Great performance from nVidia (again) with this budget GPU. Performs like a charm for games like Quake III Arena, hardware T&L, mind-blowing frame rates. Only downside being slightly slower frame rates in resos more than 800 X 600, but slow here doesn't mean THAT slow.

Monitor

(RM680)

17" LG 775N

Supports up to 1024 X 768@75Hz, 0.28 dot pitch

Keyboard

(RM55)

Microsoft Internet Keyboard OEM

Great keyboard with 10 programmable keys for internet surfing, power management, great key response. Got xtra money ? Get the retail version for RM90 & get a wrist rest

Mouse

(RM135)

Logitech wheel mouse optical

Great optical mouse, nice color, high accuracy, USB, 5 years warranty

Speakers

(RM250)

Altec Lansing ACS 45.1

Still the greatest low-cost speaker around

Total RM3405
No built-in graphics here, but the VIA KT 133 chipset does provide a built-in sound (which can be disabled).  But most gamers or users in this group would definitely prefer a soundcard, which provides greater sound quality.
Some common features of the KT133 chipset are :

Support for 4 ATA 66 devices

Support for AGP 4X

3 DIMM slots for up to 768 MB of SDRAM

Support for both PC100 & PC133 SDRAM

200 MHz system bus

VIA has come out for newer versions of the KT133 chipset, the KT133 with 686B Southbridge (ATA 100 support) and the newer KT133A .  Other chipset that supports AMD Durons & Athlons are from ALI (ALI Magik) and SIS 730. Both comes with built-in graphics & sound.

No printers was included in this guide 'coz I feel that it's better for the user to decide, plus, I think that this system will be most people's 2nd/3rd system, so they must've got a printer at home.
